When you arrive in Bordeaux you quickly understand that this old lady is not just anyone. Her imperial status obtained from the Romans gives her the madness of grandeur and her prosperity will never end.

It is known that under the Roman Empire the city of Bordeaux – called Burdigala – became one of the most opulent cities in Gaul. This wealthy lady offers herself pewter, Greek ceramics, Spanish copper, but also royal palaces, rich abbeys and a cathedral.

She became even more famous with the celebration in 1137 of a royal marriage between Eleanor of Aquitaine, granddaughter of the famous Duke of Aquitaine, William IX, a man of art and culture, and Louis – known as “the young” – second son of the King of France Louis VI – known as “the Fat”. The young couple became a royal couple with the coronation of Louis VI one month after this marriage.

Then Bordeaux woke up English by the second marriage of this same Eleanor of Aquitaine with Henri Plantagenet, Duke of Normandy who very quickly became King of England under the name of Henri II. From that time on, Bordeaux wines, which were very much appreciated by the English, were marketed throughout Europe.

And in the 18th century Bordeaux, the pretty, wealthy 2,000-year-old lady, gave herself a complete facelift that brought the city into the modern world.

These riches accumulated over the centuries gave the city and the Bordeaux wines an international reputation that is still unequalled today.
